Description
This pair of iconic Chiavari chairs was designed by Gaetano Descalzi in the town of Chiavari, Italy, where they have been produced in various models ever since. Crafted from black lacquered beech wood and upholstered in vibrant fuchsia velvet, these chairs have been fully restored and reupholstered. The Chiavari chair was first created in 1807 by the master carpenter Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi, who, at the request of Marquis Stefano Rivarola, reinterpreted French Empire-style chairs by simplifying their decorative elements and slimming down the structural components. The elegant design quickly gained popularity, leading to the emergence of numerous chair manufacturers in Chiavari and neighboring towns. The Chiavari chair was admired by historical figures such as Charles Albert of Savoy, Napoleon III, and the renowned sculptor Antonio Canova.
