The kokeshi craft is an ancient Japanese tradition started in the early 1800s: the doll is painted with pigments and waxed with beeswax. There are 11 types of traditional kokeshi located in 11 different regions of northern Japan. Dolls first appeared in Japan during the Edo period (1600-1868). Out of production.
