Description
The ethereal beauty of Cocoon lamps is a tribute to the innovative design of the 60s. This first model of the large Cocoon suspension lamp, designed by Tobia Scarpa and produced by Flos in 1962, gave rise to an iconic series in the lighting scene. The lamp is characterised by an internal structure in metal rod, which keeps the polymeric "cocoon" covering taut and gives the lamp its enveloping and soft shapes. The helical cable contains an extendable steel cable, making the lamp adjustable in height to adapt to various environments. The cocoon technique, imported to Italy in the mid-20th century by Albert Eisenkeil, recalls the cotton candy process: a sprayable polymer material was applied to create new and light shapes. Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, together with Tobia Scarpa, were among the first to experiment with this technique, and from this collaboration Flos was born, which then made the production of Cocoon lamps famous, today a symbol of elegance and innovation in Italian design. The model does not have any visible branding.
