The Charles Mackintosh 844 chair by Alivar, part of the Museum collection, is a refined example of classic 1980s design. This beautiful pair of DS3 chairs, in excellent condition, is characterized by an open pore black lacquered ash structure, with elegant square mother-of-pearl inlays on the horizontal band of the backrest. The seat, made of hand-woven natural straw, adds a touch of handcrafted authenticity. Despite being 40 years old, the chairs show only minor signs of wear in some limited places, while otherwise they are in excellent condition. Originally designed for the country house of the Scottish industrialist WT Basset-Lowke, they were however rejected by the client, despite the high level of design. These chairs represent a unique opportunity to own a piece of design history, maintaining a timeless appeal.
